Dental Practices

As of May 2019, the UK Government has set four grand challenges to be worked towards, one of these is harnessing the power of technology and innovation to help meet the needs of an ageing society. The UK population is ageing, as it is across the industrialised world.  A girl born in the UK today has a 1 in 3 chance of living to 100, and the chance of living to 100 will double in the next 50 years. The prospect of longer lives has created new demands for technologies, products and services, including new health care products, technologies, clinical care and expertise which notably includes dentistry. It’s an undeniable fact that human teeth, while extremely durable, will often succumb to structural failure or disease after several years.

This has manifested in 66% of British adults having had at least one tooth extracted (Bupa Dental Care, 2018), and the degraded state of dentition and the degree of edentulousness will further correlate with a growing average population age. It is then left to the dentist diagnose and concomitantly develop and fabricate a suitable treatment and restoration to the ever more complex scenario. This scenario resonates across all fields of dentistry, including (but not limited to): Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics Anaesthesiology, Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Implantology, Paediatric dentistry, Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Radiology.

Although there has been a general improvement in oral health over the last decade amongst adults; media and social pressures along with the commercial interests of the modern dental practice has conditioned a demand for optimum properties and aesthetics that fulfil modern and contemporary criteria for attractiveness. Such demands have been the driving force of dental practices to invest into new materials and techniques and consequently adapt and develop products and processes to the ever-advancing state of the art in dentistry. The intrinsic “evolve or die” nature of the modern dental practice lends itself strongly to several funding avenues, notably the R&D Tax Relief Scheme.
